Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness Week Holly-Jayne Tarrant June 17, 2026

Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness Week

Cervical Cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, globally. On average, 2 women die every day from cervical cancer in the UK. Regular cervical cancer screening can prevent up to 75% of cervical cancers.

Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness Week falls on the week of 15th-21st June 2026, and its focus is to ensure that all eligible women are encouraged to be screened for cervical cancer regularly, in an effort to increase the survival rate.

Cervical Screening Awareness Week is an initiative put together by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, The Eve Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Cancer Research UK, in partnership with the NHS.

HPV and Cervical Cancer

Almost all cervical cancers are caused by high-risk HPV, or Human Papillomavirus. Cervical screening checks for high‑risk HPV. If HPV is found, the sample is then examined for abnormal cell changes. (NHS, 2026)

People with a cervix aged 25–64 are invited for regular screening. In the UK, those who test negative for high‑risk HPV are now typically invited every five years, while others may be screened more frequently depending on results. (The Eve Appeal, 2026).

Previously called a smear test, cervical cancer screening involves a swab being taken from inside the cervix, so that cells can be tested for HPV. Between cervical cancer screening and the HPV vaccination, cervical cancer numbers have dropped significantly in recent years.

Find out if you’re due for cervical screening by contacting your GP.
