The 2019 Sir Mike Richards' review urged a significant expansion of NHS diagnostic services, aiming to double CT capacity and increase MRI and PET-CT scanners. The introduction of Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) sought to improve access, alleviate hospital pressures, and enhance early disease detection, especially for cancer. With 141 CDCs currently operational and the NHS set to reach 160 by March 2024, the initiative aims to reduce waiting lists and enhance diagnostic services' accessibility and efficiency.
