Manchester University NHS Foundation

When Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust needed to streamline and consolidate their teleradiology outsourcing, 4ways stepped in to service the Trust’s reporting needs, providing extensive IT support to overcome technical challenges and deliver a seamless transition ensuring patient care went entirely unaffected.

4ways provides teleradiology services to Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (‘MFT’). MFT is one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK – looking after more than 1.7 million out-patients each year with around 405,000 patients visiting A&E per year. The trust covers nine hospitals and employs over 20,000 staff.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1st October 2017 following the merger of Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM).

4ways’ teleradiology services support the MFT’s imaging department which examines 750,000 readings each year across the nine different sites that comprise Manchester University Foundation Trust.

4ways provides MFT with flexible Remote Radiology Reporting services, including Out of Hours, Routine MRI / CT / Plain Film and specialist services including Complex Abdo Pelvic reporting / CT Colonoscopy.

As part of the merger, the trust decided to streamline its teleradiology outsourcing and 4ways was successful in winning the contract to support MFT.

Catherine Walsh is Divisional Director of Imaging for Manchester University Foundation Trust: “Our partnership with 4ways provides vital support to MFT as it helps us to keep up with reporting demands, particularly for CT and MRI scans which place heavy demands on our radiologists’ time.”

“4ways provided great support that allowed us to seamlessly overcome teething IT problems. We built, shared and implemented IT plans which allowed for a smooth IT transition with system changes delivered on time. Our IT teams now work hand-in-hand with each other.”

One of the biggest challenges for any service change is the transition from one provider to another: patient care must be protected, the switch-over must be entirely seamless. New systems and processes need to be implemented and supported.

4ways and MFT’s IT teams met and worked together to build a shared implementation plan and agreed timings for the service rollout. Despite extensive testing, some IT issues did arise on go-live. A collaboration between IT teams and the Trusts’ PACS provider working tirelessly throughout the weekend resolved the issues quickly. Catherine commented “4ways provided great support that allowed us to seamlessly overcome teething IT problems. We built, shared and implemented IT plans which allowed for a smooth IT transition with system changes delivered on time. Our IT teams now work hand-in-hand with each other.”

Since the formation of the new trust, 4ways has expanded the services it provides us which includes full emergency cover (day and night), specialist reporting and ad-hoc routine/routine services. Catherine says “I like the fact that we also have access to 4ways’ super-specialist services at any time”

“With the percentage of scans performed growing between 5-10% year-on-year, it is important that we are well equipped and have the right support to keep up with this demand in a timely manner and reducing reporting delays.”

With the expansion and development of technology, reports have become more complex to examine as scans show much more detail and require more time and attention from specialist radiologists. “We wouldn’t be able to keep to our targets without the specialist support of 4ways’ radiologists.”

“4ways is a great partner to work with – our day-to-day contacts are super responsive and where we have needed further support 4ways is always readily available to help. We like the fact that 4ways has a robust audit programme with a clear focus of being clinically led”

“We have open and regular communication with 4ways and our partnership allows for effective patient care in the area of radiology. We expect high quality reporting from our external providers and 4ways meets this standard through the vital services it delivers for MFT.”
